Overview:
The Level 3 Costume Technician is an advanced-level role responsible for executing complex costume builds, character costume builds and alterations with a high degree of technical skill and efficiency. The Costume Technician 3 is expected to work independently and within a team on assigned projects, maintain high-quality standards, and ensure that all costume elements are completed accurately, on time, and in line with design specifications. This position requires mastery in a wide range of costume construction techniques, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills.
Reporting Structure:
The Costume Technician 3 will report directly to the Costume Studio Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Construct costumes and character costumes using both industrial and domestic sewing machines to a Mastery Level of quality.
- Advanced pattern modifications, high accuracy in cutting of fabrics and materials.
- Achieve deadlines by working in both team and individual settings Independently
- Work with and around chemicals such as contact cement, epoxies, super glue, and fabric dyes.
- Proper documentation of all aspects of the build process. Ensuring all steps of the process are photographed and catalogued.
- Adhere to company safety regulations, maintains a safe, healthy, and clean work /shop environment.
- Complete tasks at a consistent high quality within timelines set by supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet hard deadlines.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Theater, Costume Design, or a related field (or 4+ years of equivalent experience).
- Proven experience in costume and character costume construction or a similar role in theatrical, theme park, cruise line or similar productions.
- Mastery of complex sewing skills and construction techniques
- Mastery of industrial and domestic sewing machines.
- Master in hand sewing techniques.
- Mastery of fittings and alterations
- Understanding of tailoring of menswear
- Advanced experience in dye work, color matching
- Advanced experience working with furs and fleeces
- Basic draping or pattern making, a plus
- Excellent organizational, time-management, and multitasking skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability based on production requirements.
- High attention to detail and quality control
- Effective in time management
- High manual dexterity and hand eye coordination
- Strong communication skills, both written and interpersonal
- Ability to travel for onsite installs
Physical Requirements/Environment:
- Moderate lifting or carrying 26 – 50 lbs.
- Intermittently sitting, standing, and stooping.
- Working at heights, ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Requires repeated reaching by extending hand(s) and/or arm(s) in any direction.
- Using equipment requiring high dexterity.
Pay and Benefit Structure:
- USD Hourly $22 to $24 per hour
- Payroll will be bi-weekly in arrears.
- All Full-time hourly Team Members are allotted 5 days of PTO per year, plus designated company holidays, paid. If a holiday falls on a production-related workday or weekend, then an alternate date will be selected.
- Benefits offered to Full-time hourly team members include medical, dental, and vision.
